Tree CareBefore you bring your tree inside to decorate, fresh cut the trunk (about 1 inch off the bottom) to insure a square base for any stand and this will allow the outer ring to absorb water. Once the tree is in the stand it is important to keep the stand full with water as an average size tree will "drink" up to a gallon in the first day depending on the size of tree you have set up.Place the tree in your stand that has a water reservoir (1 gallon or more is better) and never carve the bark off to get a larger tree to fit into a smaller stand. Timing the bark off will cause your tree to loose the ability to "drink" water. If you are using one of the traditional thumb screw stands, be careful not to damage the bark during the stand installation. If you tree is without water for even a short time the outer ring (phloem) will dry causing your tree to stop drinking. If you forget to water your tree you might be able to trim away about 1/4" of the first layer at the bottom on a 20-30' angle with a utility knife. Cutting this section around the entire bottom will give you a "fresh cut" (Be very careful not to cut the water bowl or yourself during the trimming see illustration ). This process is helpful if you don't have the tools needed to put a fresh cut on a tree that has been ordered online or picked up at a location that did not have it displayed in water when you picked it out.
Some folks like to use a large bag to place under their tree to catch
any needles that may drop when removing the tree at the end of the season.
This needs to be done before you set up your Christmas Tree. Just make
sure to take the stand off after you have the tree all bagged and ready
to recycle.
